Excursions to Comacchio and its Valleys: a stone’s throw from the campsite
Less than 10 minutes’ drive from Holiday Park Spiaggia e Mare, or with a pleasant panoramic cycle along the coast, you will find yourself immersed in the magical atmosphere of what many call the “Little Venice”.
What to see in Comacchio
Your visit must start from the famous Ponte Trepponti, the imposing architectural structure dating from 1634 that once served as the city’s fortified gateway. Continue by wandering through the alleyways of the old town, where the canals mirror the colourful house facades. For history enthusiasts, the Museo Delta Antico offers an incredible journey through time, displaying the cargo of a Roman shipwreck discovered in these very waters. Do not miss a visit to the Manifattura dei Marinati to discover the centuries-old tradition of eel processing.
Itineraries in the Valleys of Comacchio
This vast lagoon complex of over 13,000 hectares is the beating heart of the Po Delta Park. From the campsite, you can quickly reach the embarkation points for guided tours on silent boats. As well as exploring the traditional fishing huts, you will be treated to the unique spectacle of the Comacchio Valleys, home to entire colonies of pink flamingos that give the landscape an almost surreal quality.

The timeless charm of Pomposa Abbey
Heading north along the coast from our campsite, after roughly 15 minutes’ drive along the scenic Via Romea, you will reach Pomposa Abbey. Considered one of the most important monastic complexes in Europe, this structure stands like a mirage, solitary against the green of the Ferrarese plain.
Its majestic bell tower is a landmark visible for kilometres around. Inside the church, you will be left breathless by the inlaid marble floors and the cycle of frescoes adorning the walls. It is the perfect trip for those seeking a restorative pause of silence, spirituality and great medieval culture, just a short distance from the comfort of the campsite.

Ravenna: UNESCO mosaics and history within easy reach
Heading south from Holiday Park Spiaggia e Mare, a roughly 30-minute drive will bring you to Ravenna. If you are wondering what to see in Ravenna in a day, prepare yourself: the city is home to no fewer than eight monuments declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
- Ravenna Mosaics: The concentration of beauty is extraordinary. A must-see stop is the Basilica of San Vitale and the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. Here the mosaics shine with an age-old light, with gold and lapis lazuli tesserae creating celestial scenes. Every ceiling and every wall tells stories of emperors and saints through an art form unrivalled anywhere in the world.
- Ravenna historic centre: After immersing yourself in Byzantine art, enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of the historic centre. Stroll to the Tomb of Dante Alighieri, set in an area of great respect and quiet, or stop in Piazza del Popolo for a coffee. The centre is almost entirely pedestrianised, making it safe and pleasant even for those travelling with children.
- UNESCO heritage and culture: Beyond the famous Byzantine sites, exploring Ravenna means discovering the Neonian Baptistery and the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo. The city offers a unique blend of Roman, Gothic and Byzantine history, all easily accessible on foot, making your day trip from the campsite a complete and stress-free cultural experience.

Wild nature in the Po Delta
Holiday Park Spiaggia e Mare is the privileged southern gateway to the Po Delta Regional Park, one of Europe’s most important wetlands for biodiversity.
If you are looking for direct contact with the wildest nature, venture towards the point where the great river meets the Adriatic. The Po Delta offers primordial landscapes, where the river branches out among dense reed beds and sandbanks. It is an absolute paradise for birdwatching and nature photography enthusiasts. The area is easily explored both by mini boat cruises and along the cycling paths that start right near our campsite and wind into the historic pine forests along the embankments.

Useful information for Holiday Park guests
To help you make the most of your excursions, we have gathered some practical tips exclusively for our guests:
How to reach the destinations
- By car: All the destinations mentioned are connected via the SS309 Romea. Ravenna is accessible heading south, while Comacchio and Pomposa are to the north. The most convenient car park for the centre of Ravenna is Piazzale Aldo Moro.
- By bicycle: The campsite offers a bike rental service. Comacchio is reachable via a safe, flat cycle path of approximately 5 km, ideal even for children.
Tickets and bookings
- Ravenna: We strongly recommend purchasing the combined ticket online for the UNESCO sites, especially for San Vitale and Galla Placidia, which have timed entry.
- Comacchio Valleys: Boat excursions depart from Stazione Foce. During high season, it is advisable to book your place at least 24 hours in advance.
The best time to visit
The Po Delta is fascinating throughout the year, but spring (April to June) and late autumn (September to October) are the best periods because of the mild weather and migratory bird watching chances. For cultural cities like Ravenna, morning hours are preferable to avoid the crowds.
Packed lunch and refreshments
Don’t want to interrupt your exploration to find a restaurant? At our campsite restaurant-pizzeria you can order sandwiches to take away. We recommend placing your order the evening before so everything is ready when you set off in the morning.
Our reception staff is always available to provide you with detailed maps and personalised tips to make your trips unforgettable!
